Misinformation and disinformation has long played a large, if not entirely positive, role in society. Disinformation was even employed during the late Roman Republic, as a means for politicians to smear their opponents. It seems clear that misinformation and disinformation will always accompany politics. However, this does not mean that we cannot minimise the harms that disinformation, and 'fake news', pose to our society. It is the belief of the people behind Thought and Speech that with proper awareness and education, the negative influence misinformation and disinformation can be minimised, allowing citizens to base their opinions on facts and restore trust in public institutions.
